Approach

Approach

02

02

Fields, scrub and small reservoirs seen from above: a dryland landscape read as one system.

From understanding a place to building an economy.

How we work

A farmer carrying a large bundle of green fodder on his head, smiling at the camera.
  1. 01

    Understand

We start by understanding a place as a whole: its land and water, its infrastructure, its local economy and the people who know it best. Nothing is designed until the whole system is understood.

In BalaghattaInterviews, group discussions and workshops with farmers, women and children across a Panchayat of thirteen clusters.

  2. 02

    Design

With the community and our partners, we look for interventions that strengthen one another. The question is not only what to build, but which combination of systems will create lasting change.

In BalaghattaThe land, the houses and the household economy are designed as one programme rather than three.

  3. 03

    Organise

We set up the structures that let people take part in the work, own it and coordinate it, shaped to each place rather than copied from the last one.

In BalaghattaA farmer-owned cooperative that puts subsidies, loans, markets, training and inputs behind one counter, with equal numbers of women and men from its first assembly.

  4. 04

    The Power of Synchronised Action

Instead of a single project, we develop a portfolio of small ventures that feed each other, from agriculture, housing and construction to energy, water, circular materials, local production and market access.

In BalaghattaTwo legally defined enterprises in the first year, growing into self-sustaining enterprises under one cooperative umbrella.

  5. 05

    Match capital

Each venture gets the finance that suits its timeline: patient capital, blended finance, commercial capital, public funding or carbon-market instruments, in the combination it needs.

In BalaghattaGovernment agreements unlock existing schemes in the first year; concessional capital funds the expansion in the second.

  6. 06

    Keep value local

Ventures stay owned by the communities that create them, so income and decisions stay in the place, while the model remains free to travel.

In BalaghattaFarmers hold the majority of the shares, and household income is planned to rise from ₹40,000 to ₹400,000 by year six.

The System

Nine layers, one coordinated model.

Each layer shapes the next. Agami designs and finances them together rather than in isolation.

Place

  • 01

    Land

Where every system begins: soil, slope, boundary and use.

  • 02

    Water

What the land can hold, and what it gives back.

  • 03

    Energy

The input that decides what can be made locally.

People

  • 04

    Housing

Shelter as infrastructure, not an afterthought.

  • 05

    Livelihoods

Work that keeps people in the places they are from.

  • 06

    Community

Governance held by the people inside the system.

Economy

  • 07

    Enterprise

Local ventures that own what they build.

  • 08

    Capital

Finance matched to the pace of regeneration.

  • 09

    Regeneration

The point where the whole system compounds.

A two-storey stone and earth house with a thatched roof at dusk, its windows lit, set against wooded hills.

In practice

Panchayat of the Future

Balaghatta, India

A dryland Panchayat of thirteen clusters, where the approach is being proven one cluster at a time: the land, the homes and the household economy, built as one cooperative.

  • 13

    clusters in one Panchayat

  • 260+

    households by year six

  • 50/50

women and men from the first assembly
